Chongqing Lifan, owned by Mr. Yin Mingshan, manufacture motorbikes and cars. Chongqing Lifan Industry Group Ltd was founded in 1992 and is one of the largest privately owned businesses in China. The company has grown rapidly in the past 15 years and employees over 12,000 staff. It has grown primarily through technological innovation and development, which led to gross sales income of 10 billion Yuan for 2007.
Mr. Yin Mingshan was imprisoned as a counter-revolutionary in the 1960s, and in 1979,and when he first moved to Chongqing he was earning the equivalent of $7 per month. His company now earns $50 million a month. He started off by copying Japanese motorbikes, but now the company have a fully functioning a design organisation and model innovation and quality of design is one of the key differentiators of Lifan models.
In 2005, Mr. Yin Mingshan proudly announced the sales turnover and export amount of Lifan to be USD 1,000,000,000 and USD 263,000,000 respectively. Lifan has been chosen as "an important technical standard pilot enterprise at national level" by Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision and the State Standardization Committee. Lifan start and expand their automobile business by the way of self-development and adopt the policy of combining jointly exploitation with purchasing technology. Up to now, Lifan have obtained about 3807 patents. Lifan automobile project covers an area 431,529 square meters, with the first construction of 178,889 square meters. The total investment of the auto project is USD 300,000,000. Now, the first construction has been completed with their own capital. They have set up four producing lines, including punch, jointing, and painting dressing and assembling, so has the auto research centre. And the second construction is being launched, too.
